Hearst Museum object titled Sculpture, accession number 2-62092, described as Sculpture;standing figure of Eskimo man w/seal slung over his back; self base; carved grey soapstone discolored to green in places; damaged head and face (old repair w/Elmer’s glue); signed on underside (in Eskimo) “Paulasi”.  Full name of carver Paulasi-Kutak (fide Nelson Graburn).  Carver was half-Eskimo (Eskimo mother, father Hudson’s Bay Co. employee).  Died in boating accident in 1971.  He was early and important soapstone carver and this piece is unusual in that it depicts man w/Eskimo features and sculptor usually carved features of white men   h.14.3 cm.
