Hearst Museum object titled Didactic, accession number 9-15878, described as a- Didactic from Japanese Pavilion of Pan Pacific Exposition.  It discusses the history of the silk industry in Japan.  The b- frame is loose.
Hearst Museum object titled Dress: bodice and skirt, accession number 7-7282a-c, described as Dress, 1902. Watered silk taffeta, pattern in blues, with pattern of watery blotch that resembles a rose blossom. a) Bodice: long slender rounded sleeves.  Brocaded black dots. high standing collar trimmed in cotton batiste or linen lawn that is decorated with an eyelet pattern of a quatrefoil. Two rows of ruffles trimmed with black tape. The front is filled with matching linen or cotton that has a single ruffle down the front also trimmed in black tape. Square tabs fall over this center embellishment. The tabs are trimmed with silk braid and linen edging. Beneath the tabs, but above the waistline is a silk satin pleated decoration with three yellow metallic buttons. Each sleeve is decorated with a tab, as on the front it has the same tape and edging and there are two buttons per sleeve. It is unlined and the boning has been removed and the waistband has been removed in the back. The armpits are rotted.  b) Skirt. Made of the same fabrics as the bodice. It is unlined (stripped of lining).  skirt was cut later possibly to fit someone shorter as the bottom flounce isn't faded. The waistband has been picked out. Vestiges of this waistband in the front. Two hanging tabs were inserted on the skirt. Any means of rejoining the bodice and the skirt have been completely removed. The decorative interest in the skirt comes from a triple layering of fabric above the hem. Each layer is decorated with a series of squared tabs, similar to those on the bodice. These tabs are backed with a band of light purple velveteen. The bottom band has been removed and it is item "c".

Bound strips of brocade hanging from brocade covered bell-shaped wooden pieces. Midway, strips are attached to horizontal wooden piece. Engraved brass at top and at each end of brocade strips. Faded blue, green, gold with rose binding. B-strips attached to top by thumb tacks. A-center wood strip mended. A and B 64 1/2 in. long x 8 7/8 in. wide.

Ochre 'Imperial-yellow' glaze covers upper surface.  two large, and many small chips.  underside unglazed;  mortar and brick fragments adhere to rim.  inscription in ink in English.*  imprinted mark of double gourd.  h. 28.5 cm., L. 24 cm., W. 15 cm.
Hearst Museum object titled Textile fragment, accession number 9-15507, described as Mounted Fragment. Silk? Warp patterned weave. Brown, green, red, and gold. From the Shosoin. Mr. Yamanobe is technical expert in textiles at the National Museum, Ueno Park, Tokyo. Note: fragment examined Feb. 1984 by Nobuko Kajitani conservator, MMA: fiber: silk; structure: plainweave (embroidered); from Horyu-Ji (temple), not Sho so-in (so indicated on slide) therefore 7th century, not 8 - 9 century. 2¼ inches by 3¼ inches.

Terminates in vertical cut at mouth at one end, in 45 angle behind horns at other end.  Mottled green glaze over most of surface with yellow ears, mane, and lip, and ivory colored teeth, horns and eyes.  Incised detail. Hearst Museum object titled Tile, accession number 9-14570, described as Roof tile; Terra Cotta, glaze; clay sculpture; blue, yellow, buff clay body; 16" long, 16" high;  Ridge roof tile; bad condition.  Lion dog crouched on all fours, tall over back, mouth open, teeth bared.  Much of the blue glaze has chipped off Roof ornament, glazed ceramic figure of lion-dog, crouched on all fours on hollow rectangular block base; tall over back, mouth open, teeth bared.  Deep incised lines for fur.  Fore paws grasp front of base.  Lung chih fungus, orcloud represented below belly. Mottled lue-green glaze covers most of figure and base, with yellow details and transparent glazed mouth, lung chin, etc.  Much of the glaze has been worn and chipped off.  H. 39.5 cm, max. L 49.5 cm, max W 16 cm Ceramic, modelled; blue, yellow, transparent glazes. Roof ridge ornament Jan. 1965 - Condition same as noted on front of card

(a) has peaked fragment of the curved tile attached to the ornamented disk.  2 holes drilled thru design.  (b) is disk, missing 1/3rd of top incl. all of curved tile section.  Ochre 'Imperial yellow' glaze on both.  Dia. (a) 14.5 cm., L. 7.5 cm.; max. Dia. (b) 15.5 cm.
Hearst Museum object titled Wall hanging, accession number 9-15596, described as Embroidered hanging; wool, silk and metallic yarn, ribbon, beads, silk satin; sewn, embroidered (satin stitch, couched) netting; red ground, multi color and gold metallic, maroon lining, yellow beads; 9 figures about 33 inches high with life-sized heads and 5 small figures, animals, insects, birds. Gold metallic and multi color embroidery in satin stitch and couching on red wool ground. Some ribbon applique. 1 3/4 inch ribbon borders top and each end. Fringe with bead at bottom. Possibly a theater hanging. 38 in. wide, 3 yards 31 in. long, 9 in. fringe at bottom.
