Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-10378, described as Bowl basket; coiled. Warp is Epicampes (Sporobolus rigens), weft is Sedge (Carex). Red pattern is Redbud (Cercis occidentalis). Black pattern is Brake fern (Pteris quilina). Very old, very worn cooking basket with grass foundation and bands of zigzag designs in black and red. The design on this basket called "measuring worm" or "inch worm" (fide Mrs. Silva, July 1973). Mended.
Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-9972, described as Bowl basket; coiled. Warp is Epicampes (Sporobolus rigens), weft is Sedge (Carex). Black pattern is Brake (Polypodium vulgare) root soaked in water. Coiled with non-interlocking stitches, on grass bundle foundation, with flaring sides.  Decoration: two concentric, horizontal black bands of zigzags. Split shoots and brackenfern root.

Coiled; wide-mouthed with sloping sides.  No decoration. 3-rod coiling with intelocking stitches. The basket has been mended at the bottom.

Decoration: three horizontal zigzags, in black, encircling basket. Brackenfern root is dark material. 3-rod coiling with interlocking stitches.  Used for serving food and in cooking.
