Hearst Museum object titled Cap, accession number 1-164153, described as Twined basketry hat.  Triangular design.  Tag "Northwest Calif att.". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined woman's basket hat.  Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel. The weft material is conifer root.  The weft overlay background is beargrass with maidenhair fern and red-dyed woodwardia designs.  Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .25 inch, followed by 1 inch of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to .5 inch below the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining.  The rim is trimmed.  The main design is eight sets of three stacked triangles above and below two horizontal lines.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.  There are three hairs woven into the basket.

The rim has a string, possibly for hanging.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably hazel or willow.  The weft material is conifer root.  On the exterior weft overlay background is beargrass with designs in maidenhair fern.  On the interior there is an overlay band of beargrass and three rows red-dyed woodwardia.  Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .5 inch, followed by 1.25 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to .5 inch from the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining.  The rim is trimmed.  The main design is three sets of three tiered zigzags.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is primarily single-sided, with the main design on the exterior and a minor, yet completely different, design on the interior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.  The design is reminiscent of Yurok designs.
