Hearst Museum object titled Basket tray, accession number 1-746, described as Tray basket, dirty and worn from use. Coiled. Third row from rim done in red; dotted rows at 4 and 5 cm from top; 8 cm from rim is a row part red, then dotted; 2 more red rows at 12 and 13 cm from edge. One tag: "Wailaki att." Two Tags: "Wailaki". Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled basket bowl, with food debris. Tight spiral start, overstitched. The coil foundation is splints only. The wefts are peeled redbud and the design is unpeeled redbud. The weft fag ends are bound under. The moving ends are trimmed with some concealed. The stitches are non-interlocking. There are some split stitches on the work face and approximately 50% split stitches on the back face. The rim is plain wrapped, with a blunt coil ending. The workface is on the exterior, the work direction is to the right. The slant of weft twist is down to the right. The characteristics of the basket do not rule out either a Yuki or Wailaki maker.

Hearst Museum object titled Cooking basket, accession number 1-517, described as Fine weave. Ragged edges, quite worn from use and very grimy. Three strand twining 7 cm radius from start of basket. Several tears, one patched. Two tags "Wailaki". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined cooking bowl, used, with no apparent designs. There is a repair at base, patched with splints, the use of splints is typical in Wailaki and Yuki coiled baskets. Crossed warp start, in a non-perpendicular Southern Humboldt Athabaskan style. Warps are a peeled shoot and wefts are conifer root. There are 2.5 inches of wide three strand twining at the base. The rest of the basket is plain twined. The rim is trimmed. The workface is on the exterior. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist and a rightward work direction.

Red designs: 2 types of zigzag going up to the left; also 2 stacks of triangles balanced on the apex of the one below. 3 red rows between rim and design area. Three tags: "Wailaki". Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled basket, used, appears to be a cooking basket, saturated with food debris. The start is a tight spiral. The coil foundation is a mixture of rods and splints. The wefts are peeled and unpeeled redbud. The design is diagonal zigzags, triangles, with a solid band below the rim. There are random rectangle designs throughout the basket. The rim is plain wrapped. The coil ending has at least 1 5/8th inch of back stitches. There is one rectangle/tick at the rim. The basket has a rightward work direction and an exterior workface. The weft twist is variable, with split stitches on the back face. The weft fag ends are primarily clipped, with some tucked. The moving ends are concealed.

Two- faced overlay designs; 2 bands of connected diamonds, running horizontally, a dotted stripe below; white overlay material. Predominantly plain twining. 3-strand twining from basket start 7 cm radius, large stitches; 2 more rows at 9 cm from start; 2 rows at basket rim. Two tags: "Wailaki". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket bowl, lightly used, with no apparent food residue. The basket has a crossed warp start, indented, non-perpendicular. The warps are a peeled shoot. The weft material is conifer root, with a beargrass design overlay. From the starting knot there are 1 1/2 inches of three strand twining, followed by 1/2 inch of plain twining, followed by 1/2 inch of three strand twining, followed by 3/4 inch of plain twining, followed by two weft rows of three strand twining, plain twining continues to the rim, where there are two weft rows of three strand twining. The rim is trimmed, with the majority of the warp sticks extending above the rim. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right of slant of weft twist. The basket has an exterior workface. The weft overlay is primarily on the exterior, with some irregularly on the interior. The basket has some undulation.
