Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably hazel. The background wefts are conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, red dyed Woodwardia, and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot is ⅓ inch of three strand twining, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining. After that , there is one weft row of lattice twining with a reinforcing rod. Plain twining continues to the ½ inch below the rim where there is another row of lattice twining. After that plain twining continues to the end of the rim, which is trimmed. The background overlay is red dyed Woodwardia. Starting at the starting knot there is one inch of conifer root with no overlay. After this there is a band of red dyed Woodwardia, followed by a horizontal band of diagonal beargrass and maidenhair fern. That is followed by another band of red dyed Woodwardia. Followed by another horizontal band of diagonal beargrass and maidenhair fern with groups of three triangles interspersed throughout. After that is one row of checkered beargrass and maidenhair fern, followed by a band of beargrass. At the rim there are repeating patterns of three beargrass triangles with red dyed Woodwardia with a horizontal stripe of maiden hair fern. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior, with a rightward work direction. The overlay is on the exterior, with some pattern coming through to the other side. The basket is from Northwestern California.
