Mr. Hu was given the bowl as his all-purpose dish when he was a “sent down youth” 知青 in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, in 1969.

Hearst Museum object titled Lid, accession number 9-23867, described as Lid for oil stove - enamel tray. The top of the lid is decorated with a red design stenciled on white ground. The center, which is slightly higher than the rest of the surface, features four characters “Yongbei Oil Stove” (永備油爐 yongbei youlu). The outer circle is a flame-like pattern. A blue bowstring decorates the rim. This would have been used on the top of a stove.

The reverse features a red inscription, stating that the mug was made by the Newly Established Central Construction Bureau of the Railway Administration, No. 6 Construction Bureau, in commemoration of the opening of the Baoji-Chengdu route. Cobalt blue bowstring decorates the rim. The handle is partially decorated in black.
