The yellow-ground shallow bowl is decorated with abstract red and orange pattern on the interior rim, and a blue bowstring to the rim. Acquisition Data: Gift from Palace Museum colleague Hu Chui, 14 December 2011. Mr. Hu was given the bowl as his all-purpose dish when he was a “sent down youth” 知青 in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, in 1969.

Hearst Museum object titled Lid, accession number 9-23867, described as Lid for oil stove - enamel tray. The top of the lid is decorated with a red design stenciled on white ground. The center, which is slightly higher than the rest of the surface, features four characters “Yongbei Oil Stove” (永備油爐 yongbei youlu). The outer circle is a flame-like pattern. A blue bowstring decorates the rim. This would have been used on the top of a stove.

The reverse features a red inscription, stating that the mug was made by the Newly Established Central Construction Bureau of the Railway Administration, No. 6 Construction Bureau, in commemoration of the opening of the Baoji-Chengdu route. Cobalt blue bowstring decorates the rim. The handle is partially decorated in black.

The white ground is stenciled with a red inscription: “Be like Chairman Mao’s good cadre, comrade Men He” (向毛主席的好干部门合同志学习 Xiang Mao Zhuxi de hao ganbu Men He Tongzhi xuexi). A model of loyalty, Men He (门合 1928-1967) wrote in his diary: ‘All of my thoughts are for Chairman Mao, all of my actions are in service of Chairman Mao. All of my movements follow Chairman Mao closely. All that I do is for Chairman Mao’ 一切想着毛主席、一切服从毛主席、一切紧跟毛主席、一切为着毛主席. Above the inscription are red pine needles against a yellow background. Leading the theoretical basis of our thoughts is Marxism-Leninism” (领导我们事业的核心力量是中国共产党。指导我们思想的理论基础是马克思列宁主义。Lingdao women shiye de hexin Liliang shi Zhongguo Gongchandang. On the upper body is a red inscription: “Sailing the sea depends on the helmsman, making revolution depends on Mao Zedong Thought (大海航行靠舵手干革命靠毛泽东思想Dahai hangxing kao duoshou gan geming kao Mao Zedong Sixiang). Seal on foot: “The Masses Beijing Daily Use Enamel Factory, February 1969” (大众北京市日用搪瓷厂69. 2. 5 Dazhong Beijing shi riyong tangci chang).Blue bowstring decorates the rim. Condition: Minor enamel loss, otherwise in good condition.
