The red slogan above reads: “Resist America; support Korea. Guard home, defend the country” (抗美援朝 保家衛國Kang Mei yuan Chao baojia weiguo). On the back a red inscription indicates that the mug was a gift to People’s Liberation Army (PLA) soldiers, here referred as “the most endearing people” (最可愛的人Zui keai de ren). At the top of the mug a register of doves fly in a blue sky. The nine-character inscription at the bottom notes the occasion: A committee of Chinese People’s Representatives visit Korea [to express] sympathy (中國人民赴朝慰問団 Zhongguo renmin fu Chao weiwentuan). The white ground is stenciled with an image of a torch flanked on each side by an inscription: A single spark can start a prairie fire (星星之火 可以燎原 Xingxing zhi huo keyi liaoyuan), a quotation from Mao Zedong. The light of given off by the torch is represented by a flourish of yellow and orange pigment. Brown bowstring decorates the rim. Pink decorates the rim of the lid.

An inscription in black indicates that the mug was made as a memorial gift for the Kunming office of “Kun 901 troops”, made 17 October 1969 (昆字九0一部队驻昆办事处 一九六九.十.十七制).
