Hearst Museum object titled Basket, accession number 1-87049, described as Bottle neck; human figures, red yarn decoration. Tag "Calif. unspef." Per Ralph Shanks: Coiled basket with bottle neck and shoulder. Three rod foundation. Pinhole start. The basket has willow background wefts. The designs are possibly black bracken fern root. There are anthropomorphic figures around the center of the basket, with red yarn between the figures. The neck and rim have lines and zigzag patterns. Near the base there is a repeating pattern of two stepped rectangles under the figures and one rectangle on the bottom of the basket. The basket has an exterior workface and a rightward work direction with mostly clipped and some bound under weft fag ends. The basket has a plain wrapped rim, and the coil ending is tapered. There is a human hair woven in near the red wool and another near the base. The three rod foundation indicates that this probably a Panamint Shoshone basket.
