Hearst Museum object titled Cap, accession number 1-224009, described as Basketry hat, twined.  Tag "Very fine old Indian basket N W $25_00". Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined woman's basket hat. Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably willow or hazel. The weft material is conifer root.  The weft overlay design is beargrass and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot, there are two weft rows of plain twining, followed by three strand twining for 1/4 inch, followed by 1 inch of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining 1/2 inch below the rim.  The rim is trimmed.  The main design is three sets of beargrass diagonals outlined in triangles. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwest California.  There are some gray, possibly animal, hairs on the interior.

The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay background is red-dyed Woodwardia with maidenhair fern and beargrass designs. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for ⅓ inch, followed by 1 inch of plain twining, followed by one weft row of lattice twining. Plain twining continues to 0.5 inch from the rim where there is one weft row of lattice twining. The rim is trimmed. The main design is three sets of two stacked parallelograms and three sets of two diagonal stacks of triangles. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is mostly single-sided, with the design on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California.
