Hearst Museum object titled Smoking accessories, accession number 9-8341a-d, described as (a) water tobacco pipe; metal; oval base with multicolor vase and pear shapes in cloisonne; hinged tobacco storage container insert; tubular inserts for (b) tweezer-brush; (c) water container with long curved stem, has (d) tubular tobacco bowl insert; gold silk carrying cord with frog and symbol; water pipe filtered out the bitter tars and oils in tobacco; the lower part of the curved mouthpiece is water container; (c); the shorter straight tube is inserted into this vessel with its lower end resting in the water, and its upper end is actually the bowl which holds the tobacco (d).  When pipe is lighted the smoke is drawn down and through the water and out of the mouthpiece.  The tweezers (b) is used to carry tobacco to the bowl and a pick (missing) to clean the bowl.
