Hearst Museum object titled Basket, accession number 1-22559, described as Plain conical twined basket, white and pale brown material.   Tag "Klamath River Tribes Att.".  Second tag "59".  Third tag with "Hupa att." crossed out. Per Ralph Shanks:  Conical basket, unused.  The warp material is probably hazel or willow. The background weft is conifer root.  The weft overlay is primarily beargrass, with one line of maidenhair fern.  At the starting knot there is 1.5 inches of three strand twining, followed by plain twining until 3/4 inch from the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining, followed by plain twining to the rim.  The rim is trimmed.  The design is alternating conifer root and beargrass. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist and a rightward work direction.  The overlay is single-sided on the exterior; there is some overlay on the inside.  The workface is on the exterior.   There is a hair woven into the interior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined basket tray, perhaps a flour/ sifting tray, probably not used. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably hazel or possibly willow. The background weft is conifer root.  The weft overlay is beargrass.  At the starting knot there is 1 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining until 1.5 inches below the rim, where there is 1 weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to the rim. The main design is comprised of diagonally stacked parallelograms, with two circles above and below, and another band of parallelograms at the rim. The basket has an interior workface with a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The overlay is primarily on the inside.  The rim is trimmed.  There are hairs woven into the basket.
