: Hearst Museum object titled Fire drill, accession number 1-13851a,b, described as Fire drill and borer. The board contains seven small holes for fire drill spaced approximately 2 cm. apart. On the reverse side there are seven holes approximately 3 cm apart. The board is of willow, the borer is of willow weed. Fire was twice produced in the presence of the collector with this implement.

Fresh mesquite screw bean is cooked by storage in an immense pit, ca. 15 ft. across and 4 or 5 ft. deep, lined and covered with arrow weed. From time to time water is sprinkled on the mass. After about a month, the screws turn brown and very sweet.
