Hearst Museum object titled Bowl, accession number 1-28698, described as Broad coiled basketry bowl. Black and brown design. Tag " Luiseño att." Probably attributed by Larry Dawson per Ralph Shanks. Per Ralph Shanks: Broad flaring bowl in the shape of a winnower; not used. Materials include a deergrass bundle foundation; orange, tan, and black dyed juncus wefts; and sumac wefts at the start for two inches. The designs occur in two areas, the base and the sides. On the base the design is outlined in a single coil ring of black dyed juncus with the interior half in orange and half in tan juncus, with two black dyed juncus outlined triangles. On the sides are seven designs including geometric and floral shapes. These designs stop two coil rows below the rim. The workface is on the inside. The wefts are bound under and the work direction is to the right. The basket has a plain wrapped rim with a tapered coil ending with two back-stitches. This is attributed to the Luiseño due to the design layout with a ring at the base and designs inside the ring.
