Hearst Museum object titled Basket, accession number 1-12090, described as Per Ralph Shanks and Justin Underhill: 3 tags with cat #, 1 with Wailaki twined open-work hanging basket. Cross warp starting knot done with 2 pairs of widely spaced warp sticks. The basket is plain twined to the rim, with the uppermost weft rows being closely alligned with one another. The basket is irregularly shaped with a rightward work direction and the wefts are up to the right slant of weft twist. Rim is trimmed with most warp sticks extending above the rim about 1/8-1/4 inch. The basket has a commercial rope/string tied to it so the basket can be hung. The warp rows have 1 to 3 warp sticks. The material is peeled shoots, possibly willow. Fibre strand found in the last weft row from the rim about 2 inches from the rope handle. Hemispherical openwork basket. In good condition, just dusty. Plain twining, weft ends turned to parallel a warp up to the top. 2 rows of close twining at the rim, with cut warps extending above. 3 strands of commercial cotton twine knotted together and tied to basket edge as a handle.

Twill-twined; 4 strands of cotton twine tied onto rim as a handle. 2 rows of close twining at rim. Tag "Wailaki". Per Ralph Shanks: Openwork basket bowl, used, per Samuel Barrett was used as a general receptacle hanging basket. Perpendicular crossed warp start, wrapped with crossed double sticks. Probably willow or hazel warps and wefts, with a cotton string handle, and cotton tie on the side of the rim. The wefts primarily are over 1-3 warps. The warps are primarily crossed. The warps are paired when new warps are added, with the beginning of the warp twisted under a weft stitch and then joined with the old warp. The basket is plain twined, at the rim there are two closer spaced weft rows. The rim is trimmed with warp sticks extending above the uppermost weft row. The basket has an exterior workface, the work direction is to the right; the slant of weft twist is up to the right. The basket slightly undulates, and is slightly oblong, probably due to being hung.

Hearst Museum object titled Cap, accession number 1-97983, described as Fine basketry hat and black and white. Tag: "Klamath R. Tribes att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined woman's basket hat. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is possibly willow. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay design has a beargrass background with maidenhair fern designs. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for 1/2 inch, followed by 1 1/2 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining 1/2 inch below the rim. The rim is trimmed. The main design is three elements comprised of two stacked parallelograms with a stepped design in the interior. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California.
