Hearst Museum object titled Plaque, accession number 1-27893, described as Basketry plaque, twined, with openwork rim. Tag "NW Calif". Sticker "NW Cal att.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket plaque. The basket has a crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably willow. The background weft is conifer root. The weft overlay is beargrass, maidenhair fern, and red-dyed woodwardia. At the starting knot there is 1 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining until .5 inches below the rim, where there are 2 weft rows of three strand twining. Then there is a .25 inch of open work, followed by three rows of plain twining. The warp sticks are trimmed and a rod was added to support the rim. The rim and the last three rows of twining are wrapped. The main design is comprised of two bands of triangles with a maidenhair fern line in the center. The basket has a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is primarily one-sided. There are hairs woven into the basket.
