Pattern in bear grass (Xerophyllum tenax). Background overlay is white bear grass. Black dye is Maidenhair (Adiantum), red dye is Chain fern (Woodwardia).
Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-19811, described as Bowl basket; coiled. Warp is Epicampes (Sporobolus rigens) and Sumac, weft is Sumac (Rhus) and Palm. Red pattern is possibly Yucca. Orange pattern is Jemens. Small deep basket, rough work, simple design.
Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-14478, described as Bowl basket; coiled. Warp is Epicampes (Sporobolus rigens), weft is Rhus. Pattern is yellow Juncus. Fide James C. Moreno 2/15/83: Flat basket, edge rather sharply upturned, faint narrow ornament in brown. The so called slight arrow design is there for the purpose of raising up the sides of the basket so the husks on dry acorns would rub off easier.
