Hearst Museum object titled Cooking basket, accession number 1-517, described as Fine weave. Ragged edges, quite worn from use and very grimy. Three strand twining 7 cm radius from start of basket. Several tears, one patched. Two tags "Wailaki". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined cooking bowl, used, with no apparent designs. There is a repair at base, patched with splints, the use of splints is typical in Wailaki and Yuki coiled baskets. Crossed warp start, in a non-perpendicular Southern Humboldt Athabaskan style. Warps are a peeled shoot and wefts are conifer root. There are 2.5 inches of wide three strand twining at the base. The rest of the basket is plain twined. The rim is trimmed. The workface is on the exterior. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist and a rightward work direction.

The weft overlay is beargrass. At the starting knot there is .75 inch of three strand twining followed by 2 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues until 2 inches below the rim, where two weft rows of lattice twining are separated by one row of plain twining. Plain twining continues until the rim, which is trimmed. The main design is located above and below the lattice twining. The design is a repeating pattern consisting of a pentagon with a triangle on the point. The overlay is primarily on the exterior, although a separate pattern is evident on the back face. There is an original repair on the base. The basket has an exterior workface. The coil foundation is one rod and splints of peeled shoots. The wefts are peeled redbud with unpeeled redbud designs. The design at the base includes two concentric horizontal bands with one break in each that lines up. The design on the sides of the basket is three sets of two parallel horizontal bands, with four downward steps. There are random rectangles, some forming small designs. The rim is plain wrapped and the coil ending is blunt with four diagonal back-stitches. The weft fag ends are primarily clipped, with some bound under. The weft moving ends are primarily concealed. The exterior has below 5% split stitches. The interior of the basket has below 50% split stitches. The basket has an exterior work-face with a rightward work direction and a down to the right slant of weft twist.
