Image Missing: Hearst Museum object titled Sculpture, accession number 2-71434, described as Sculpture: med grey Povungnituk stone; man standing beside tall “flame”; self base; engraved “DEVID” and syllabics “Iqila” on underside. Provenience: Canada, Arctic Quebec, Povungnituk, Inuit; Davidialuk Alasua Amittu. The artist said this is a portrayal of one of the last shamans, named Irqilak, who was in competition with the newly arrived missionaries. In order to keep his flock from being attracted to the white missionary orders, he went up on a hill and used his magic powers to make a great flame burst from the rock.
