Hearst Museum object titled Treasure basket, accession number 1-164158, described as Twined trinket basket with terraced rectangular overlay designs.  Tag "Northwest Calif Att." Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined basket, probably made for sale, the shape appears to be derived from the traditional Northwestern California hat shape. Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably hazel. The weft material is conifer root.  The weft overlay design is beargrass and red dyed woodwardia.  Starting at the starting knot, there is 1/2 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1 1/2 inches plain twining, followed by 1 weft row of three strand twining.  Plain twining continues to the rim where there is 1/4 inch of crossed warp open work.  The rim appears to be comprised of 1 weft row of twining with a reinforcing rod wrapped with a tan material.  The main design is a red dyed woodwardia background with a horizontal band of beargrass rectangles forming a zig zag followed by three horizontal bands of two weft row wide beargrass. The basket has a rightward work direction, with up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided, on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwest California.  There is a hair woven in near the rim.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Globular twined basket bowl "fancy basket".  Crossed warp starting knot, overlaid with beargrass.  The design overlay is on the outside of the basket.  The warp material is hazel.  The weft is conifer root.  The weft overlay design is beargrass and red- dyed woodwardia fern.  At the starting knot there is 1/2 inch of three strand twining, after that 1 inch of plain twining, after that three weft rows of three strand twining, switching to plain twining until the rim.   The warp sticks stick out above the rim a 1/4 inch.  The design is five elements of vertical zigzags in alternating tan and red, both outlined in small triangles.  On the base there is a beargrass overlay of a sun-like/ linked triangle pattern.  The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist with an exterior workface.  Based on the materials and techniques this is a Northwest California basket, possibly Karuk based on the extensive use of red-dyed woodwardia.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Close-twined and openwork basket, made for sale.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warp material is probably hazel.  The basket has conifer root wefts.  The overlay weft material is beargrass, maidenhair fern, and red-dyed woodwardia.  Starting at the starting knot, there are two weft rows of plain twining, followed by 3 weft rows of three strand twining, followed by 1 1/4 inches of plain twining, followed by 3 weft rows of three strand twining.  Going up the sides of the basket plain twining is followed by openwork parallel warps, followed by plain twining with its uppermost weft row in three strand twining, followed by openwork crossed warps.  At the rim there are 2 weft rows and a possibly a reinforcing rod wrapped with beargrass.   The rim undulates.  The main design is horizontal bands of alternating beargrass and maidenhair fern triangles.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The overlay is single sided, with the design on the exterior.  The workface is on the exterior.  The basket is from Northwestern California.

Per Ralph Shanks:  Twined basket bowl.  The basket has a crossed warp starting knot, indented.  The warp material is probably willow.  The weft is conifer root.  At the starting knot there are three weft rows of three strand twining.  After that 2 inches of diagonal twining followed by one weft row of three strand twining.  After that diagonal twining continues until the rim where there are two weft rows of three strand twining followed by diagonal twining all the way to the rim. The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The basket is from Northwest California.  The use of diagonal twining for the majority of the basket is uncommon in Northwest California.  Merriam said that diagonal twining is common among the Yurok.

The main design is a horizontal band of sets of three stacked triangles above and below a center line.  The basket has a rightward work direction, with up to the right slant of weft twist.  The workface is on the exterior.  The overlay is single-sided, on the exterior, with some design coming through on the interior.  The basket is from Northwest California.  There is a hair woven into the basket near the rim, below the openwork.
