Hearst Museum object titled Sunshade, accession number 1-164148, described as Twined openwork cradle sunshade basket. Tag "Klamath R. River Tribes Att." Second tag "NW Calif Att." Per Ralph Shanks: Twined openwork basket, with use stains. The warp material is probably willow and a dark material. It has a crossed warp starting knot with space between the cross. The weft is conifer root. The rim wrap is beargrass and conifer root. At the starting knot there is closer spaced plain twining. After that the there are rows of wefts separated by about .5 to 3/4 inch of openwork warps. At the rim the wefts are spaced closer. There are four areas of striped light and dark warps. The rim is trimmed, with a rod that is wrapped with conifer root and then attached with beargrass in three areas and conifer root in three areas. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist and a rightward work direction. The workface is on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California, possibly Wiyot based on the striped warps.
