Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-27885, described as Overlay twined, globose. Black and brown design. Sewn on rim. Per Ralph Shanks: Twined globular basket bowl, probably made for sale. Crossed warp starting knot. The warp material is probably willow. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay design is beargrass, red dyed woodwardia, and maidenhair fern. Starting at the starting knot, there is 1/2 inch of three strand twining, followed by 3 inches plain twining, followed by 1 weft row of three strand twining, followed by 1 weft row of plain twining, followed by 1 weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to the rim where there is 1/32 inch of parallel warp open work. The rim appears to be comprised of 1-2 weft rows of plain twining with reinforcing rods wrapped with beargrass and red dyed woodwardia. The main design is two horizontal rows of slanted diamonds in woodwardia and maidenhair fern with a row of triangles at the rim in the same materials. The basket has a rightward work direction, with up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is single-sided, on the exterior, with some design visible on the interior. The basket is from Northwest California, possibly Whilkut based on the Boulder Creek location of collection and the design coming through to the interior.
