Hearst Museum object titled Cooking basket, accession number 1-759, described as In good condition but dusty, shows signs of use. A large, wide and shallow shape. Two- faced overlay designs; 2 bands of connected diamonds, running horizontally, a dotted stripe below; white overlay material. Predominantly plain twining. 3-strand twining from basket start 7 cm radius, large stitches; 2 more rows at 9 cm from start; 2 rows at basket rim. Two tags: "Wailaki". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket bowl, lightly used, with no apparent food residue. The basket has a crossed warp start, indented, non-perpendicular. The warps are a peeled shoot. The weft material is conifer root, with a beargrass design overlay. From the starting knot there are 1 1/2 inches of three strand twining, followed by 1/2 inch of plain twining, followed by 1/2 inch of three strand twining, followed by 3/4 inch of plain twining, followed by two weft rows of three strand twining, plain twining continues to the rim, where there are two weft rows of three strand twining. The rim is trimmed, with the majority of the warp sticks extending above the rim. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right of slant of weft twist. The basket has an exterior workface. The weft overlay is primarily on the exterior, with some irregularly on the interior. The basket has some undulation.
