Hearst Museum object titled Cap, accession number 1-53608, described as Basket hat, coiled, rim damaged.  On side "Mission 233-L-26"  In Ink on bottom "T B C"  "Cahuilla att". Per Ralph Shanks:  Women's basketry hat.  The coil foundation is deergrass bundle.  The background wefts are sumac and the weft designs are in orange and black dyed juncus.  The designs are a rounded uneven four pointed star at the start and five diagonal rectangle chains.  Two coils below the rim there is a single coil of black dyed juncus.  The basket has an interior workface with bound under weft fag ends and a rightward work direction.  The rim is plain wrapped with a herringbone finished.  Some of the rim is missing.  Hats in Southwest California could be used for personal eating bowls; this one appears to have been used as such.  Based on the shape and design layout this could be Gabrielino.
