Hearst Museum object titled Cap, accession number 1-70260, described as Coiled, bowl shape. Paper label on bottom "Mission Hat 9254". Tag "9254 Mission Hat". Per Ralph Shanks: Women's basketry hat. The coil foundation is deergrass bundle. The weft background is sumac and the designs are in orange and black dyed juncus. There are two designs. The primary band is located two coils below the rim and is light triangles outlined in black dyed juncus with one coil of black dyed juncus below and above the triangles. The main body design is curved bands of black dyed juncus alternating with orange juncus. The basket has an exterior workface with clipped weft fag ends and a rightward work direction. The design layout is either Chumash or Gabrielino. The specific design of this primary band is a design known from documented Chumash baskets. However, the placement of the primary band two coils below the rim is a Gabrielino characteristic. Taken these facts into account the basket can be attributed to either Chumash or Gabrielino.
