(a) Mask: wood and buffalo hide; bug eyed, fanged with protruding tongue; one lower fang broken; tongue is orange cloth with three gold buffalo hide decorations with mirrored centers; tongue and ears are nailed on; black and white checkered straps secure mask to face; red, white, black and gold paints used. Length 28.1 cm. Width 27.2 cm. (b) Wig: made of split bamboo woven cap covered with brown paper and commercial sisal for hair; sisal very long, tied with commercial cotton string to cap; top of wig has red painted buffalo crown similar to rooster crown. Length +/- 1.4 m. Worn in the Tjalon Arang dance in Bali to depict the witch Tjalon Arand. It is a mythical story about the witch and her vengeful destruction of the town in her daughter’s defense.
