: Hearst Museum object titled Netsuke, accession number 9-7609, described as Netsuke: man seated inside grotto formed by a tree. His left arm raised. Signed by Chōbu. According to the donor's catalog: "Netsuke in old ivory of a grotto backed by a denoted and decorating tree. Within - a man is seated in strength and command. Clad in a sweeping robe - his left arm - raised - and the right hand caressing the back [untranscribable] dragon - who languishes with his head on the lap of the mighty man. Bashiko (Ma Hsi Wang) - a sennin and legendary Chinese physician who lived from 2697 to 2597 B.C. at the time of Huang Ti. He is shown performing operation on the ailing dragon - which he followed by a draught of liquorice. Sometimes he is shown carried into the clouds on the back of his grateful patient. It is a profound Netsuke of strength and archaic mysticism. Bashiko."
