Hearst Museum object titled Bowl basket, accession number 1-157469, described as With pedestal base.  Twined, wrapped rim and base selvage. Tag : "Northwestern Calif attr.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined basket bowl with pedestal, made for sale.  Crossed warp starting knot.  The warps are willow or hazel.  The basket has a conifer root weft, with an overlay of beargrass.  Starting at the bowl's starting knot there is 1 inch of three strand twining, followed by 1 inch of plain twining, followed by two to three weft rows of three strand twining, followed by plain twining up to the rim, where there is 1/4 inch of open work, with crossed warps, followed by two weft rows of plain twining.  The rim is wrapped, with beargrass and conifer root around a reinforcing rod.  The pedestal of the basket, starting at the part furthest from the basket bowl, has a wrapped rim, with a reinforcing rod, followed by two weft rows of plain twining followed by 1/4 inch of open work crossed warps, followed by two rows of plain twining followed by a 1/2 inch of open work with crossed warps, followed by three weft rows of plain twining, followed by four weft rows of three strand twining, followed by four weft rows of plain twining, where it joins the basket bowl. The primary design includes three sets of two parallelograms stacked vertically with squares in beargrass on the interior.  The basket has an exterior workface with a rightward work direction and an up to the right slant of weft twist.  The overlay is single sided, on the exterior, except on the base which is on the interior.  The basket is from Northwest California, the design and materials are reminiscent of Southern Humboldt Athabaskan baskets.
