Per Ralph Shanks: Globular twined basket bowl "fancy basket". Crossed warp starting knot. Overlay primarily on the outside, with some on the interior. The warp material is possibly willow or hazel. The weft is conifer root. The weft overlay design is beargrass and red- dyed woodwardia fern. At the starting knot there is 3/4 inches of three strand twining, after that 2 inches of plain twining, after that one weft row of three strand twining, switching to plain twining until the rim, were there are two weft rows of three strand twining. The main design is a horizontal band of triangles followed by a band of diamonds followed by another band of triangles. Four weft rows below the rim there is are two red weft rows. On the base there is a speckled beargrass overlay. On the interior overlay designs there are two bands of alternating tan and red triangles. The basket has an up to the right slant of weft twist with an exterior workface. Based on the materials and techniques this is a Northwest California basket, possibly Whilkut based on the interior overlay designs. There is a hair woven in the basket, located towards the top row of triangles.

Per Ralph Shanks: Twined woman's basket hat. Crossed warp starting knot, slightly indented. The warp material is probably hazel. The weft material is conifer root. The weft overlay background is beargrass with red-dyed woodwardia and maidenhair fern designs. Starting at the starting knot, there is three strand twining for .5 inch, followed by 1.5 inches of plain twining, followed by one weft row of three strand twining. Plain twining continues to .5 inch below the rim where there is one weft row of three strand twining. The rim is trimmed. The main design is three sets of five stacked parallelograms with two diagonal slashes throught them. The basket has a rightward work direction, with an up to the right slant of weft twist. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is single-sided, with the design on the exterior. The basket is from Northwestern California.

Three break-outs in rim, several cracks. Pine root weft; peeled shoot warp sticks. Mainly plain twined. Tag: "Wailaki attr.". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined cooking basket, used. Crossed warp start, not a traditional wrapped Northwest California style starting knot, it has seven plain twined rows on the exterior and interior, probably over seven warps. See 1-2543 for a similar start. The warp material is a peeled shoot, possibly willow; the wefts are conifer root with an overlay design in beargrass. Starting at the starting knot there is three strand twining for about 3/4 inch, followed by plain twining up to the one row of lattice twining over a large rod, which is natively repaired in at least one area; after the lattice twining there is two rows of three strand twining followed by two rows of plain twining. The rim is trimmed with no warp sticks protruding. The basket somewhat undulates. The work direction is to the right, with an exterior workface and up to the right slant of weft twist. The overlay is irregular double sided, with the main design on the exterior. The basket was attributed to the Wailaki by Larry Dawson based on a comparison with 1-12121, but if one looks at 1-2543, which is Lassik, there is enough similarities to bring an absolute attribution to Wailaki into question. The basket is probably then either Wailaki or Lassik.
