The wefts at the point have broken off, and the buckskin start has unraveled but is still attached. The bottom 6.5 cm are done in 3-strand twining, also 2 rows along the rim. A stick is lashed by buckskin (?) just inside the rim; also, there is a row of lattice-twined shoots inside, close to the bottom. Conical shape. Two tags: "Wailaki". Per Ralph Shanks: Twined burden basket, used. Starting knot present but falling off, it appears to be crossed warp with leather wefts. The basket has peeled shoot warps with conifer root wefts and beargrass overlay. A rod is lashed on with leather on the interior of the rim. From the bottom of the basket above the break there is three strand twining for 1 3/8th inches, followed by one row of plain twining, followed by two to three rows of three strand twining, followed by two to three rows plain twining followed by 3/8 inch of three strand twining, followed by plain twining to the uppermost four weft rows, where there are two weft rows of three strand twining followed by two weft rows of diagonal twining over two wraps. The slant of weft twist is to the right; the work direction is up to the right. The workface is on the exterior. The overlay is primarily single sided, with the primary design on the exterior and with a top interior band prominent in comparison to the rest of the interior. The basket undulates.
