Hearst Museum object titled Hat, accession number 9-12044a-c, described as (a) Hat; man’s; cylindrical, brimless; black felt with the base wrapped around with grey cotton with black curvilinear embroidery; leather inner band and yellow satin lining imprinted wiht manufacturer’s, dealer’s and owner’s names; b) tapering cylindrical metal form for a); c) box; worn by Parsi men for ceremonial use; the fenta was allegedly introduced from Persia by Dastur Mulla Pheroze, a priest, (1758-1830) and gradually became fashionable as a form of headgear. This specimen is a “shawl” fenta because of its embroidered cloth trim. Such hats were made in England for Parsi customers in India as the trademarks inside the hat show. B.B.I. = donor’s initials.
