Hearst Museum object titled Plate, accession number 9-18653, described as plaque, copper repousse; depicts Hafez, Persian mystic poet; holds rosary in left hand, begging bowl in front of him; he sits in a garden with cypress, willow and plane trees; encircled by band with curvilinear design; traces of black mastic inlay; hanging device on back; Depicts Hafez, a major mystic poet. The inscription between his face and the book reads “Hafez Shirazi”= Hafez of Shiraz. Hafez = person who memorized the Koran. Rosary in left hand = tasbih. Coco-de-mer begging bowl is used by dervish. He sits on a hide of some sort indicating his dervish status so he was a Sufi of some order or another. His actual tomb is in a public garden in Shiraz. Signature lower right = “Sayed Hussein,” the actual maker of this plaque.
