Hearst Museum object titled Water tobacco pipe, accession number 9-8199a-d, described as water tobacco pipe; metal; a) rectangular base with inlaid black lacquer in T and right angle shaped grooves had hinged tobacco storage container insert with Chinese inscription, 3 tubular inserts; long curved mouthpiece; b) bowl with tubular extension; c) tweezers; d) tubular insert for pick (pick missing); red, green silk tassels and brass snaffle attached to plaited carrying cord; to filter out the bitter tars and oils in tobacco; the lower part of the curved mouthpiece is water container; the shorter straight tube (b) is inserted into this vessel with its lower end resting in the water, and its upper end is actually the bowl which holds the tobacco; when the pipe is lighted the smoke is drawn down and through the water and out of the mouthpiece; the tweezers is used to carry tobacco to the bowl and the pick (missing) to clean the bowl
